I reminded that my name is written in the English alphabet; if they couldn’t pronounce it, maybe they needed to work on their literacy. And I made a point to use it everywhere. Emails were closed using my full name, I corrected those that didn’t say it properly, I insisted that my full last name be recorded on job interview transcripts, I treated them like idiots if they didn’t make an effort to use my name respectfully. . “Gary, I told you how to pronounce my name properly. Do you want me to voice it again for you?” The man I’m going to spend the rest of my life with should understand and support why I’m fighting for the pride of my last name.
